My house was full of 13 teenage girls last night. It was a mad house. On Monday nights, my husband and I host a bible study for the youth group. Somehow this turned into a girls group and the numbers exploded. We talk about everything from suicide, cutting, feeling worthless, parents fighting, and on and on the list goes. Heavy. Hard. Real issues. So because we have had several studies when it got super emotional and difficult, I decided to lighten it up a bit and treat the girls to Cheesecake Factory. Each girl could get one slice and each had to be respectful and calm in the restaurant while we waited for the servers to box our order (15 cheesecake slices! Ya’ll rock Cheesecake Factory!). As we walked in, an older lady passed by us on the sidewalk before crossing the street. She smiled and chuckled, “Good luck! You’re brave!”. I replied, “Pray for me!” and we proceeded to cross the street and into the lobby where the girls were very respectful, calm, and mature. We walked out after thanking the staff for our treats and crossed the street once more. One of the girls quipped, “Megan’s like a Mama Duck!” and boy did that hit me.
These are my babies. I didn’t birth them. I didn’t raise them. I don’t see them every single day. But they are my kids. Just ask their moms, I’ll defend them like they’re mine. God help anyone who touches them while I’m around. But thats what a Mom does, right? She guards, protects, and nurtures her babies. And how lucky are we that we have a Father who not only gave us that instinct but also shares that fierce, passionate love for us?
If you had a mother or father who wasn’t loving, protective, and nurturing, may I say, I love you and my heart aches for you. Everyone deserves that love. May I also encourage you with this snippet from Isaiah 49:14-16
“But Zion says “The LORD has forgotten me! The LORD has forsaken me!” Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she have no compassion on the son she has borne? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed your name on the palm of my hand. Your walls are continually before me.”
God loves you like a Mama Duck. He counts the hairs on your head. He knows you by name. Better than that, He literally has you tattooed on His hand! That ink ain’t comin’ off anytime soon. God is a loving, nurturing Father. He watches over His nest. He protects His babies. He guards them with His life and the price He paid will forever cover His children. Spoiler alert: You are His child. That means He protects even you.
Rest in His love. He’s not goin’ anywhere.
